Endangered Andean Cat Caught on Camera at High Altitude!

Photo: The Andean cat, one of the rarest in the World Native to the high mountains of South America, this gorgeous animal is called a Vicuna. Now, footage capturing these felines from great heights has animal fans buzzing with excitement.

What is the Andean Cat?

Small Andean cats-Small but tough It has thick fur that allows it to live in the cold mountainous regions. Aptly named for the spots and striping that disguise them between boulders, this cat has an unusual pattern on its coat. In addition, they are referred to as ‘Andean mountain cats’ because their habitat can be upland at elevations greater than 3,000 meters [9] above sea level.

Importance of the Andean Cat

The Andean cat is not just another pretty face, it plays a vital role in its environment. Keeps the population of prey animals in check like wild mice. But this cat is under threat. There are no more than several hundred Andean cats alive in the wild. Their habitat loss and poaching are the main reason for their endangerment. They are losing their homes to people cutting down trees and building roads, which is not giving them more space or food.

Exciting Camera Footage

Wildlife photographers have recently used some camera traps in the mountains aimed at taking photos of Andean cats. They placed these in far away locations where, really, no one would go. The video filmed the Andean cat elegantly walking through rocks and hunting for foods. These are the times that remind us how priceless such cats like them and why we have to preserve their kind….

How Can We Help?

One way for us to help is to spread the word about this interesting animal, Andean cat. It is also critical that people support wildlife organizations so they can protect their habitat. Simple steps such as less waste and plastic use help protect nature.

The Andean wildcat is a mountain treasure, and we have to do something about save it from extinction.
